Have had my sister use the BadScience forum to promote my survey and gather participants from a more academic perspective. This has provoked a debate regarding the subject matter in the survey and what the value of the information gleaned will be.
I am going to sign up to the Bad Science forums to contribute directly (as my sister linked them to the surveys).

Research methods
I have found practically nothing on Google Scholar with the search "Ageism music industry". I will mainly need to focus this assignment on first hand data.
Qualitative study: Ask Tom hingley about ageism. Andy Whitehouse, Phil Moody about A&R experience and whether age restrictions are placed on artists to be signed by A&R people.
Info request to PR people in record labels to find ages of artists. 3 questions max.
Look at the top 20 artist, find modal age.
Case study of Pop versus Hiphop to find whether or not age is an issue. Look at X-factor finalists throughout show's run to find any age correlations, eg. have all over 30's been phased out in earlier series'?
It might even be worth making a survey with 'survey monkey' to find whether peoples' tastes are influenced by age.

Possible case Study
Richard Hawley vs. The Arctic Monkeys - Mercury awards.
Alex Turner gets up on stage having won the award and says "somebody call the police, Richard Hawley's been robbed!".
Perhaps this is a case of ageism as Richard Hawley is (now) 44 and the Arctics relatively young.

after half-term
I am interested in Adourno, Authenicity, Drugs and Hedgemony and I do think that these will have a relevance to my research project.
In particular, authenticity. When looking at the the artists that I love and respect, many of them have had interesting lives and histories of trauma, drug abuse and redemption in the form of music.
One thing that I have noticed is that in the X-Factor, every contestant needs to have a back story to garner the sympathy of the judges and the audience. This then gives authenticity to the artist. After these facts have been established and the artist's talent is confirmed, my hypothesis is that the youngest candidate will eventually prosper due to their marketability to the target audience of the X-Factor.
It is my opinion that the X-Factor is a highly packaged microcosm of the overall music industry as a whole and that the same rules apply as in the wider environment, albeit in fast-forward. The artist builds a fanbase over the course of a couple of live performances, then their marketability is judged, the winner releases a single and then they start their (often short-lived) career.
I will need to research the ages of the artists in question and acquire evidence for this assumption.

Ideas (thursday 13th)
Up until this week I was keen on research in the field of electronic design, building a cloned audio processing device.
Having carried out exercises in class with David Lim, I have decided that this might not be an original enough line of study nor fulfill the requirements of the project. I would therefore like to record the idea of a research project asking the question "to what extent is an artist's first success determined by age".
This question stems from an idea as old as the modern music industry (post-war) that artists should be new, fresh-faced, innovative, edgy and energetic.
In the early 1960's there was an interview conducted with he Beatles hot on the hells of the band's new found success. It was very interesting to note that Paul McCartney was quoted as unsure as t what the future held for the group, due to the transient nature of A&R.
Further back, during the 1950's there are accounts of young men being approached by a man with a cigar in the back of a limousine, promising stardom and riches.
Although the music industry has changed dramatically over the course of the past 60 years, there are artists who's first successes were all those years ago and are still playing music to large audiences, for example Chuck Berry.

Today's research online
Today I have read the following articles on my chosen subject:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music/rockandjazzmusic/3669258/Why-ageism-in-pop-is-so-old-hat.html
Quote of the article: It was certainly apparent in the ridiculous Mercury prize, which this year featured nine debut albums and found no room in the shortlist for anyone over 30.
